External Tournaments

Over the last year we have had a few of our players travel around the country to play in various tournaments. The most notable successes were Dion's 1st place at the 2024 South Island Rapid Championships, as well as winning the U16 year group at the NZ Junior Championships earlier this year. Matthew, Adam and Ariel also achieved various successes in tournaments around NZ this year. Matthew came 3rd equal in the Merv Morrison Memorial and got a grade prize at the South Island Championships, Adam picked up two grade prizes at the South Island Championships and South Island Rapid Championships respectively, while Ariel won a grade prize at one of the Summit Rapid tournaments and following arbiter training, has achieved the National Arbiter title.

The Hawke's Bay Chess Club played in the Bledisloe and Blackburn Cup interclub competition where we played online matches against some of the other clubs in New Zealand. Although we struggled a bit against the bigger clubs, I am pleased to say that we managed to win the Blackburn Cup as the best placed regional club (i.e. not from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin) in the competition. I would like to give my thanks to Paula who supplied the venue for us to play in.
In the recent Hawke's Bay Rapid, the Hawke's Bay champions were Matthew, Chris and Ross, the B grade winners were Ben and Mike, while Jasreman won the Junior grade.
