2013 Interschool Teams Chess Tournament

Hawke's Bay Region

The Interschool Teams Chess Tournament begins at a regional level, with winners moving on to compete in the National Final. This will be held at Mt Maunganui College, 564 Maunganui Rd, Mt Maunganui on September 21st - 22nd 2013.

There are three sections - Primary (up to Year 6), Intermediate (Years 7 and 8) and Secondary (Year 9 up).

Up until 2004 Hawke's Bay schools have competed in the Central North Island Region based in Hamilton. However, the competition has grown very popular, so the North Island has been broken into smaller regions, and we have been asked to hold our own regional competition. The Hawke's Bay tournament for 2013 will be held:

Friday August 23rd, 2013
Registration available at 8.30 a.m.
Hastings Sports Stadium, Railway Road, Hastings

The competition involves teams of four players, with the best player in each team ranked as number 1, and the lowest as number 4. Players must stay in this order throughout a tournament, although teams progressing to the next tournament may make changes before they compete again. Please note: If teams choose to swap their players they will be automatically disqualified.

Each game is played for 40 minutes. During this time spectators (including teachers and coaches) are not allowed near the playing area, so it is very important that all players understand the rules. However, when players finish a round and move out of the playing area they will need to be supervised.

The No.1 player in each team will be considered to be the captain, and will have responsibility for ensuring that results are entered correctly on the results sheet at the end of the team table, and signing it when satisfied, before delivering it to the results table. We also ask every player to check and initial the entry of results.

It is not possible to know how many rounds will need to be played until all entries are received. Ideally, each team should play all the other teams in their section (a Round Robin), but if entries are large in a particular section the competition will be run as a Swiss Tournament. Details of game times and competition rules will be sent to schools after entries close.

Schools may enter as many teams as they wish. However, if entries are large, the top teams from each school will be placed in a separate competition, and this will be considered to be the championship, with any further teams competing against each other at a lower level. Please remember when making your entries that this is a tournament for your stronger players, and is not suitable for beginners.

The entry fee for the Hawke's Bay Tournament is $30 per team. Once expenses such as administration, Chess Federation levies, hall hire and prizes are covered, it is hoped that we will be able to offer some financial assistance to the winning teams to enable them to represent the region at the National Finals.

A canteen will be available at the venue.

We ask that each team brings 2 chess sets, so that we can be certain of having enough.

The closing date for all entries is Monday August 19th, 2013

Entries must be EMAILED back to sallyrice@xtra.co.nz with payment made no later than the day of the tournament. Please use the attached entry form. Please make sure that names are spelt correctly.

NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE BECAUSE OF THE NEED TO ORDER TABLES AND ORGANISE CHESS SETS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ENTERED.
