HB Region Secondary Schools Chess Tournament 2011

Hastings Sports Centre - Monday 23rd May

A very successful tournament was held today and the results can be viewed on the Club website. Entries were down on last year, possibly due to the change of day and some mentioned exams starting this week. The tournament ran very well and was played upstairs at the Sports Centre which was a very comfortable setting for a chess tournament. There were 45 entrants from six schools. The standard of chess was overall very good and although history will only record the winner of a particular game it will not give an indication of how close some of the games were. The Open Grade played with clocks for the first time this year and all participants handled the clocks very well (like 'clockwork') with some games going down to just seconds remaining (George!). Our Club member participants (George, Tobias, Scott & Nicholas) acquitted themselves very well; checkout the results on the website. Congratulations to Nicholas who entered the Open section, three years above his age group and finished with 4 wins out of 5; as did George. The winner of the open was Sang Jin Kim from Napier Boys' High School with a perfect record of 5/5. Congratulations Sang Jin.

Other information

Entries so far: (this list may not have all schools entered, last update Thursday 19 May 2011 2 p.m.)

The big change this year is the Open grade (including Year 12 and 13) using chess clocks with 20 minutes each for the game.
Other grades will have 35 minutes for the game without a chess clock, so games will be assessed if not already finished.

If you are year 9 to year 11 and want to play in the open you can. This is recommended for the top players who are too strong for the lower grades.

Most players do not read the rules, but if you are not most:
Laws of Chess
Read E.I.01A. Laws of Chess (important is Article 4: The act of moving the pieces) and in the E.I.01B. Appendices read A. Rapidplay section
